We ventured to the Jade, Porcelain and Pearl markets today. The pearl market is located in a very large 5 story mall. We couldn't look over the railing without getting vertigo. The pearls were beautiful. You could buy pearls from 10-1,000.00. We learned a lot about pearls and jade today. All girls in China wear jade because it brings them luck. There are three different grades of jade as well. The first kind of jade is pure with no other mineral deposits in it. It is VERY expensive. Grade 2 has a few impurities, but is still a good quality jade. The third grade is not good and can break easily. When one buys a jade bracelet here, you are supposed to buy it snug; putting lotion on your hand first and working it over your hand. You should never take it off after that. Supposedly jade radiates good energy and keeps you healthy as well. I didn't buy any (yet), but the pieces that we saw were beautiful. The pearl factory was overwhelming. There were thousands and thousands of them ranging in quality and color. The black pearls were my favorite. I was able to pick up pearls for MK and Quinn to give them when they graduate high school. Alex bought a chop (carved stamp) with his name in Chinese characters. The top of the chop had a pig on it, since he was born in the year of the Pig.
Guangzhou is a bustling urban city. It is HUGE. I loved it! The people of China are very kind.
For lunch we went to Lucy's, and American style restaurant so Donovan could eat some french fries. Phillip ordered the BBQ dried squid. All I can say it was the smelliest food ever. It smelled just like fish flake food. He tried to eat it with ketchup. Still no good. He tried to eat it with a slice of onion. Still yucky.
We are having a great time here, but we miss MK terribly. MK- I lOVE YOU!!!
Enjoy the pictures!
PS. Tomorrow's post will have MK's new sister in them!! Woo Hoo!! I have butterflies in my stomache right now!
